THE HALLOWEEN-L FAQ

* Please send ONLY in Plain Text. HTML and Rich Text is no longer accepted and all such posts will be bounced.

* When you join an email list, read the FAQ. Know how to unsubscribe.
Directions are usually at the bottom of every list post. Subscriptions are handled by an automated system. Posting to the list asking to be unsubscribed only generates joke responses and doesn't get you unsubscribed.

* Spamming, postings of advertisements and so forth are not tolerated on the list. The OCCASIONAL ebay post is acceptable, but in general this list is for information and community, not advertisements.

* No cross posting. This means, do not write one post and subject header, then CC it to several lists. Please do not cutNpaste posts from other lists.
The only reason this ever seems to be done is to promote a business or continue a flamewar. If you want to announce something or discuss something on this list, just make a new post to this list.

* Profanity and flamewars will not be tolerated. There will always be minor arguments, but when a topic becomes too inflammatory, it will be killed.
Avoid political or religious jokes.

* Replying to a killed thread will result in being kicked from the list.
There will always be a few posts directly after a thread is killed and a little leeway may be given, however posting to a killed thread hours later is unacceptable. When someone is kicked, it is not posted to the list. You will simply not continue to receive list mail. Contact the Administrator
(keeba@hedstorm.net) to be reinstated.

* The Halloween-L mailing list works on the "Three Strikes You're Out"
system. First offense results in being kicked. Second offense results in a week long ban. Third offense, permanent ban.

COMMON COURTESY

* Consideration. Please be considerate of the other members on the list.
Remember, you are speaking to real people here, not computers. Avoid bias,
racial or ethnic slurs, country-oriented jokes, religious or political jokes
and so forth. Please do not post off topic items that may possibly start
flame wars. I'm not saying post nothing but Halloween related
topics--between seasons, no one is expected to keep to topic at all times.
Current event topics come up all the time, however your views on certain
subjects may not be shared by all and it just starts wars. If someone does
post something that is offensive to you (and keep in mind this happens every
season when kids join the list specifically to stir up trouble), please
remember: Don't Feed The Trolls. You are only encouraging them to continue.

* If you must leave the list for an extended period, say a vacation, and you
have a vacation message ("I will not be in the office until..."),
unsubscribe from the list temporarily. Repeated vacation messages will get
you bounced from the list. Likewise, returned posts due to a full inbox will
also get you bounced from the list. If you think your inbox is likely to
fill up and bounce messages while you are gone, unsubscribe from the list
temporarily.

* Keep quoted text to a minimum. When replying to a post, please trim off
the sections of the previous post that aren't of use. Please leave on
sections that *are* of use. This is especially kind to those who receive this
list via digest.

* Make subject headers accurate. When changing the subject of a post, please
change the header. I was taught that the proper way was to add the New
Header + WAS: + trim the previous header to the first few words or the most
recognizable words. {New Subject WAS: Old Subject] You may have a different
way, but it all boils down to knowing what a post is about.

* Keep signature files brief. Signatures (those lines at the end of your
email message telling us who you are) should be no more than 3 or 4 lines
long. Any more than that is inconsiderate and annoying.

* Read all your list mail first, saving the ones you intend to reply to and
answer afterwards. Don't answer as you go along. You may find that later in
the day the question was answered several times already. You may also find
that at a later point the thread had been banned by the Admin and you have
now been booted from the list.

* If someone does something that doesn't follow your idea of common
courtesy, don't immediately jump on them. We're all human, we all forget
things. The next time you want to jump on someone about something, please
remember that after you do there will be people waiting like vultures for
YOU to screw up.

* Someone once gave me this tip: If you find yourself replying to a post
with an answer that is three words or less, it probably doesn't need to be
posted. In general this cuts out all "Me Too" posts. If someone posts to the
list that they have a file and asks who wants it, send your "I do!" email
directly to that person. This way the list doesn't get loaded with two word
replies AND you are assured of getting the file you asked for. Remember, we
all miss the occasional post. This also helps people who receive this list
via digest.

* If you ask the list a question and don't get a response, please don't
assume that you are being ignored. There are many reasons some questions
don't get answered, the biggest one being that nobody knows the answer.Other
reasons could be that the one person who does know the answer, missed your
post. Perhaps everyone who read your question assumed that someone else more
knowledgeable would respond.
